About OI buildup

Open interest (OI) is the number of open futures or options contracts. Read together with the price, the change in OI shows what traders are doing: new buying, new selling, or closing old positions. We compare each F&O stock's near-month future with the previous trading day.

  1. Long buildup: price up and OI up (fresh buying).
  2. Short buildup: price down and OI up (fresh selling).
  3. Short covering: price up and OI down (sellers closing).
  4. Long unwinding: price down and OI down (buyers closing).
Where does the OI change come from?

We save every contract's open interest each trading day after the close and compare today's OI with the last saved day.

Does long buildup mean the stock will go up?

No. It only describes what happened today. It is data for learning, not a buy or sell call.

Is this available for options too?

Yes. In the option chain, the OI column shows each strike's OI change and its buildup.
