EMA 9 / 21 crossover strategy

A classic trend-following rule: buy when the fast 9 EMA crosses above the slow 21 EMA, exit when it crosses back below.

Rules

  • Timeframe: daily candles
  • Entry: EMA 9 crosses above EMA 21
  • Exit: EMA 9 crosses below EMA 21
  • Stop-loss: 5% below entry

Why it can work

Crossovers catch the middle of a trend. They are late at the start and give back some profit at the end, but can ride long moves.

Where it fails

In sideways markets the lines cross again and again, giving many small losses.
