What is the stock market

A share is a small piece of a company. The stock market is where people buy and sell these pieces.

NSE and BSE

India has two big exchanges: NSE and BSE. You place orders through a SEBI-registered broker, and buyers and sellers meet on the exchange.

Why prices move

When there are more buyers the price rises, more sellers and it falls. Company results, news and the overall market mood all play a part.

Index (NIFTY, SENSEX)

NIFTY 50 is a combined number of 50 large NSE companies. It tells you whether the whole market went up or down today. You don't buy an index directly like a share.

Market hours

The market runs Monday to Friday, 9:15 am to 3:30 pm India time, and is closed on market holidays.
