Volume: how strong is the move

Volume is how many shares changed hands in that period. The small bars under the chart are volume.

Moves on high volume

A breakout on high volume is considered more reliable: many traders are behind it.

Low volume

A rise on low volume can be weak. Indices like NIFTY show 0 volume because an index itself isn't traded.
