How to Backtest a Trading Strategy Without Coding (Free)
Build entry and exit rules from indicators like RSI, EMA, MACD and Supertrend, then test them on up to 5 years of NSE data and see profit, win rate, drawdown and every trade on the chart.
What a backtest tells you
A backtest runs your rules on past candles: when the entry condition is true it buys at the next candle's open, and it exits on your exit condition, stop-loss or target. You see how many trades it took, how many won, the total and average return, the worst drawdown and the charges paid.
Rules without code
Pick a left side (an indicator or price), a comparison (crosses above, crosses below, above, below) and a right side (another indicator, price or a number). Example: RSI(14) crosses above 30 AND close above EMA(200). Add up to 10 conditions with AND / OR, a stop-loss %, a target %, and choose intraday or positional.
Avoid common mistakes
Test on several stocks and periods, not just one lucky chart. Keep charges on. Prefer rules with enough trades (30+) and a drawdown you could live with. A good backtest is a reason to paper trade the idea, not a promise of future profit.
How to do it on iTradeChart
- Open Strategy → New strategy, or start from a ready-made idea such as EMA crossover.
- Choose up to 10 stocks and a timeframe (5 min to daily).
- Write entry and exit conditions, then set stop-loss, target and capital per trade.
- Pick a period (3 months to 5 years) and run. Open 'See trades on chart' to check each trade.

Questions
Which indicators can I use?
More than 85, including RSI, EMA, SMA, MACD, Supertrend, Bollinger Bands, VWAP, ADX, Stochastic, Ichimoku and 19 candle patterns.
Is the backtest data reliable?
Candles come from the market data feed and indicators use TradingView-style formulas. Trades fill at the next candle's open, so the result does not peek into the future.
Can I run the strategy live?
Yes, as paper trades or alerts. Deploy it and it watches the market and places virtual orders or sends you a notification.
For learning only. Paper trading uses virtual money. Nothing here is investment advice.
